The following survey is intended to gauge whether you are bringing the purpose of your organization to life in a way that is relevant and meaningful to your key stakeholders.
If you answered “yes” to 7 or more of the questions, congratulations, your purpose based brand is alive and well. You know what you stand for and you’re telling the world about it. Your employees buy-in and help you fulfill it day in and day out. Customers and community members have a sense of who you are as well as what you sell. You’re on the lookout for new ways to bring it to life and you approach marketing assignments as opportunities to further serve the Purpose.
If you answered “yes” to roughly 4-6 questions, you’re on the right path to building a brand of great Purpose. Try to identify the weak links in your communication strategy. Is the articulation of your Purpose too complicated for people to understand? Are you overlooking your employees? Are you treating promotions or special events as something ‘separate from’ a purpose-based brand building exercise? Identify the areas where your Purpose and Values are absent and begin doing the work that needs to be done to express who you are, what you stand for and what difference you make everywhere you can.
If you answered “yes” to fewer than 3 questions, it may be that you either: (a) don’t know your Purpose—and therefore need to focus on discovering your Purpose until you identify one; (b) aren’t properly positioned—so no one will listen to what you have to say; or (c) don’t subscribe to purpose-based branding principles—and have never bothered telling anyone what you stand for. Identify the breakdown and get to work.
